Introduction:
The term
environment was derived from the French word “environer’’, which means surround. So environment is the
surroundings of both biotic components (i.e., living organism) and abiotic
components (i.e., non-living organisms). The
science of Environment studies is a multi-disciplinary science because it
comprises various branches of studies like chemistry, physics, medical science,
life science, agriculture, public health, sanitary engineering etc. It is the
science of physical phenomena in the environment. It studies of the sources,
reactions, transport, effect and fate of physical a biological species in the
air, water and soil and the effect of from human activity upon these.
Definition:
‘The term environment is used to describe, in the aggregate, all the external forces, influences and conditions, which affect the life, nature, behaviour and the growth, development and maturity of living organisms.’ So the environmental study is a systematic study about environment, changes in environment and interactions of organisms with surrounding.
Scope of environmental studies:
The environment consists of four
segments as under:
1. Atmosphere:
The
atmosphere implies the protective blanket of gases, surrounding the earth. The
atmosphere is composed of nitrogen and oxygen. Besides, argon, carbon dioxide,
and trace gases.
2. Hydrosphere:
The
Hydrosphere comprises all types of water resources oceans, seas, lakes, rivers,
streams, reserviour, polar icecaps, glaciers, and ground water.
3. Lithosphere:
Lithosphere
is the outer mantle of the solid earth. It consists of minerals occurring in
the earth’s crusts and the soil e.g. minerals, organic matter, air and
water.
4. Biosphere:
Biosphere
indicates the realm of living organisms and their interactions with
environment, viz atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere.
Importance of environmental
studies:
1.
Environment
studies are concerned with day – to – day interaction with the surroundings
with which human being is closely associated.
2.
Environmental
Study is related to many branches of Sciences
3.
It is
concerned with the importance of wild life and its protection.
4.
It explains
the significant role of biodiversity in establishing ecological balance.
5. It gives information relating to Population growth, Population explosion and impact on Population growth.
6. It also gives information about water conservation, watershed management and the importance of water.
