Definition:
“A system derived from the
integration of living and non-living factors of environment is called
ecosystem”.
Structure of ecosystem:
An ecosystem consists of abiotic
and biotic components.
1.
Abiotic components: Non living organisms come under abiotic
components. Sunlight, water, soil, energy, chemical, temperature etc are some
example of abiotic components.
2.
Biotic components: the biotic components
or living organisms can be divided into 3 types. They are:
i)
Producers: Living organisms which
can synthesize their own food are called as producers. All green plants are
producers as they can produce their own food through a process known as
photosynthesis. They are also called as “autotrophic” organisms.
ii)
Consumers: the organisms which can use plants or animals
or both as their food are called consumers. They are also called as “heterotrophic”
organisms. The consumers are further divided into 3 types:
a)
Herbivores: The plant eaters are
called “herbivores”. Ex: cow, rabbit etc.
b)
Carnivores: The animal eaters are
called “carnivores”. Ex: lion, fox etc
c)
Omnivores: The organisms which can
eat both plants and animals are called “omnivores”. Ex: human beings.
iii)
Decomposers: The organisms which can decompose large
organic compounds into simpler compounds are called decomposers. Ex: bacteria
& fungi.
